Lavrans Borgen in his studio, surrounded by his colorful paintings

Lavrans Borgen's paintings are marked by warm, clear colors and distinct motifs. The images are built from fields of color separated by black and white lines, giving a clean and refined expression. The paintings are saturated with color, yet remain light and airy. People and animals are set against a vivid background, where subject and backdrop bring out one another. The artistic expression balances the graphic against the organic, the simple against the expressive. The motifs often convey a calm – it is restful for the viewer to let the eyes settle on the paintings. People and relationships are portrayed with clarity and warmth. Borgen explores family ties in particular – mother and son, father and son, and the bond between siblings. Here, safety, devotion and gratitude are central themes. At the same time, Lavrans is deeply fascinated by the chaotic, humorous and curious interplay that can arise, both between people and between people and animals.

The moods in the paintings speak to the viewer's own history and close relationships, and to the longings that live in all of us. Through their richness of color, the paintings meet the viewer in an open and friendly way. They give something immediately to the one who looks – direct and clear. At the same time, the paintings have more to offer when the motifs are given time to work on the viewer. Lavrans Borgen shows great variation in colors and motifs, yet every painting carries the young artist's distinct mark and recognizable expression.
